Are you ready to quit tobacco? Starting with a plan is an important first step. Without a plan, you are less likely to quit and stay quit. A plan can be as simple as the following steps:
- Prepare to quit. Determine your reasons for quitting tobacco. Write them down and keep them nearby for extra motivation later.
- Select your Quit Day. This could be one week or one month away, or any time in between. Many people chose a special day to quit, such as a birthday or anniversary. Circle the date on a calendar or write it down in a notebook.
- Get support. You may want to reach out for counseling services or enroll in an online tobacco cessation program. The Ohio Tobacco Quitline is a free tobacco cessation program based on proven strategies that have helped more than 1.5 million people quit tobacco. Phone and online, phone only, and online only options for the Ohio Tobacco Quitline are available. In addition, you may wish to speak with your doctor about nicotine replacement therapies. The Lake County General Health District promotes the use of the Ohio Tobacco Quitline and works to encourage individuals to create a quit plan. The Lake County General Health District is currently working to increase referrals to the Ohio Tobacco Quitline and is always looking for businesses, community organizations, non-profit organizations, government agencies, or individuals who would like to join in this mission.
