Lake County General Health District (LCGHD) has received an award in the amount of $95,000 from the Ohio Department of Health as part its Creating Healthy Communities grant program. The project period begins October 1, 2024, and funding will be renewed annually through a five-year cycle that concludes September 30, 2029. Thirty-one Ohio counties were awarded funding in this program cycle.
The Creating Healthy Communities program seeks to prevent and reduce chronic disease by collaborating with communities to improve access and affordability of healthy foods, as well as increase access to opportunities for physical activity where residents work, live and play. The program will focus on sustainable, evidence-based, policy, systems, and environmental changes that promote a culture of health within communities. Year one priority communities include Eastlake, where a complete healthy eating and active living assessment will be conducted, and Painesville, where identified strategies include improving Huntington Park and expanding access to healthy foods at the Painesville Farmers’ Market. Priority communities and strategies will evolve as the project continues in years two through four.
“This is an exciting opportunity for LCGHD and Lake County, and we are looking forward to working with residents and community stakeholders to create positive change within Lake County,” stated Population Health Coordinator Christine Margalis.
